The UAE government has announced a promising unemployment benefit scheme set to kickstart in 2023.

This article delves into the who, what, and how of this groundbreaking initiative.

Let’s go!

What is the unemployment benefit scheme

The prime minister of the UAE launched this unemployment scheme, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

He announced this unemployment scheme and other federal laws early this year.

However, this unemployment scheme was finalized and passed in the UAE sometime around May 2022, and it will come into effect from January 2023.

There are a lot of things that are not clear about this unemployment scheme as of right now since it was just announced, and the relevant ministries are tight-lipped about it.

However, we will discuss all the details that have been provided to us till now and how they will help the unemployed people in the UAE.

Who qualifies as unemployed in the UAE under this scheme

This scheme was announced for all the Emiratis, expats, and foreign workers in the UAE, regardless of their nationality.

Moreover, some categories of people are exempted from this scheme.

Domestic workers, Investors, Temporary Contract Workers, Retirees with a fixed pension, new jobholders, and people under the age of 18 would not be able to reap the benefits of this unemployment scheme.

This scheme targets unemployed individuals in the UAE, who often find themselves in trouble after suddenly being sacked from their jobs.

The utilities and living costs in the UAE are a lot; hence this new scheme for the unemployed people of the UAE will do wonders.

What are the unemployment benefits in the new scheme

There are many benefits of this new scheme; however, the details and the working of this scheme are still unknown because the ministries and relevant authorities have been very tight-lipped about it.

Hence, we guess that we’ll know a lot more about it in the next couple of months leading up to the scheme’s inauguration in January 2023.

Those who qualify in this scheme will pay AED 40 or AED 100, depending on the package they choose with the government yearly as insurance.

Suppose, under unforeseen circumstances, the said person loses their job. In that case, they will be paid up to 50 or 60 percent of their basic pay, which will be determined after a committee reviews the termination.

Under this scheme, the maximum one can get is AED 20,000 per month. These monthly cash payments will go on for a specific time, during which the people would be expected to find another job or source of income.

However, the length of the duration during which the person will get the pay or the different packages they can get are still unclear, as we talked about earlier.

More information is soon to follow; hence, we will keep you updated!
